Chapter 15

Guide might have whined about how we could only do things in the safety of our bedroom anymore due to Young Lady being around, but that didn’t stop her from still sneaking away with me to have some fun while everybody else slept before we returned to said bedroom.

Then, in the morning, I was woken up prematurely by somebody who I wasn’t used to waking me up.

“May we talk?” Scientist asked as she gently tugged on my arm from the side of the bed.

I carefully slid Guide off me, prompting her to wrap herself around Ninja, while yawning and nodding to Scientist.

“Did you ever sleep? I don’t remember you coming to bed,” I said once we left the bedroom.

“No. I was theorizing all night,” Scientist answered.

“You shouldn’t do that. You need sleep.”

“Skipping sleep every so often is not an issue for me. I will make up for it in the near future.”

“Good enough. You science types are stereotyped to skip sleep anyways, so I guess it’s natural for you.”

“Nod.”

“So, what did you want to talk about?”

“The entities. Gunsmith shared her thoughts with me while you built Young Lady her bedroom, and I used those thoughts to further my theory.”

“And that theory is?”

“You do not need to participate in this ‘game,’ at least not as you have been. I believe that the game you are familiar with is a mask for the true game.”

“What do you mean?”

“None of this matters. Building, defeating bosses, exploring—there is no point to any of it. The entities have already tested humans of the past with such methods, but they all failed. Even when they performed perfectly, they failed. Gunsmith told me that she believes the entities do not know what they are doing, and I believe that is true now. That is why I also believe this game does not matter. It is the false means to an unknown end. No matter how you progress in this game, I do not believe it will matter. It will not bring you closer to ‘winning.’”

“Then what I am supposed to do?”

“I am unsure. I do believe you should continue with the game as is for now, but I do not understand what their goal is, so it is impossible for me to determine what the correct method to ‘win’ is. Do you disagree?”

“I don’t know, but… if this game is pointless, then I have no idea what I’m supposed to do.”

“It is an unfavorable position to be in.”

“I mean, I think you’re probably right, just like Gunsmith is right. Too much of this doesn’t make any sense. It’s inconsistent and feels like… the entities are just throwing random shit at me to see what sticks. If there’s some connected meaning behind all of it, then it makes no sense. But what am I supposed to do then?”

“Have you considered not participating?”

“If I don’t, then bosses will eventually be forced to spawn that I won’t be ready to deal with, and we might all die. Or they might think I’ve given up and kill me for disappointing them.
